WHAT IS BOX CITY?
This unique event offers an opportunity for all members of the community to join together to raise awareness about homelessness, while also raising important funds for the FISH Hospitality Program, which assists homeless families in Middlesex, Union and Somerset Counties. Box City is an overnight “camp out style” event, where participants bring and design a cardboard box to sleep in overnight, brave the elements, and experience a small part of what homeless people endure every night.
A prize will be awarded for the best box decoration, and music will be provided throughout the evening.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Everyone! Families, businesses, school and community clubs, youth groups, sports teams, college students, boy scouts, and girl scouts are all encouraged to participate. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone (with a ratio of 1 chaperone to 7 children).
WHEN & WHERE?
Box City will take place on the front lawn of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, corner of Mountain Avenue and East Broad Street. Participants can start setting up their boxes at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. The event runs until 8 a.m. Sunday, April 28. Participants are encouraged to stay and attend church services at PCW on the morning of April 28.
HOW DO I REGISTER?
Go to our Registration Page on this site and download, print and complete the Registration Form. Also print the Pledge Sheet and Indemnity & Release Forms. Copies of all of these forms are available in the church office at 140 Mountain Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090.
Registration Fee: $25/pp
Set a goal to raise $100 in pledges or contributions. Payments can be made by check (made payable to PCW, with Box City in the memo) or by credit card through our Easy Tithe online giving portal. If using Easy Tithe, please be sure to indicate the donation is for Box City and the name of the individual.
Individuals who raise $100 or more will receive a special prize.
DEADLINE TO REGISTER
Deadline to register and submit pledges is Wednesday, April 24. Late registration will be accepted the day of the event only if space is still available.
WHAT CAN I BRING?
Bring a decorated box, a sleeping bag or pad, tarp, pillow, warm clothes and a refillable water bottle. You may also bring a cell phone, games, money for a snack bar, medications and essential toiletries, but please NO alcoholic beverages, glass bottles, pets, tents or electronic items.
WILL THERE BE FOOD?
A modest soup dinner will be provided, as well as a light breakfast on Sunday morning. A snack bar will be available during the evening.
WHAT IF IT RAINS?
This event will take place despite rain, cold or snow (hopefully no snow in April!).
CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE EVEN IF I CANNOT SLEEP OVERNIGHT AT BOX CITY?
We understand that some participants may not be able to spend the night. You are welcome to buy your way out of a box for $75! Participants who buy their way out of a box are also welcome to attend the evening program at Box City, including soup-line dinner, speakers and live entertainment from 6pm-10pm.
WHAT ARE THE RULES?
Everyone must turn in a signed waiver
Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone (ratio of 1 chaperone to 7 children)
Only participants over the age of 21 and families may stay in their vehicles in the church parking lot
NO Alcoholic beverages, glass bottles, pets, tents or electronic items
Stay in designated area at all times
Anyone caught breaking the rules will be asked to leave the event immediately.
